Resumen
It has been the purpose of this study to synthesize the presentday status of the taxa and nomenclature of the class Hirudinea so that the work of hirudinologists and zoologists studying this interesting group of annelids may be facilitated. The nomenclature of orders, superfami!ies, families, subfamilies and genera are given, with their synonymies. Any presentation of this nature will indubitably be found to contain some omissions, improper allocations of genera in families, and errors in the spelling of author's names or the dates of publication; it is hoped that researchers in this field of zoology will advise the author of such omissions and improper interpretations so that a
subsequent catalogue may be as free from such errors as is possible. Two new generic names are presented for preoccupied names and one genus has been revived, one new subfamily is erected and new names are proposed for one superfamily and three subfamilies: Americobdella nom. nou. for Cardea Blanchard, 191 7 a name preoccupied
by Whitfield in 1885 for a mollusk (Monogr. U. S. Geol. Surv., 9: 134 ) ; Oceanobdella nom. nou. for Abranchus Johansson, 189 6 which had been used previously by Harlan in 1825 for a reptile (Ann. Lyceumn, New York, 1 (8 ) : 233 ) ; the genus Poecilobdella Blanchard, 1893, which has been considered to be a synonym of Hirudinaria Whitman, 1886 by J . Percy Moore and other hirudinologists, is revived since Hirudinaria had been used for a mollusk by Scacchi in 1833 (Oss. Zool., 9) ; Americobdellidae nom. nou. for Cardeidae Ringuelet, 1944 and Americobdellinae nom. nou. for Cardeinae Ringuelet, 1944 as a result of the new type genus name ; Glossiphonioidea nom. nou. is substituted for Glossosiphonioidea Pinto, 1921 , Glossiphoniinae nom. nou. is substituted for Glossosiphoniinae Pinto, 1921 and Erpobdellinae nom. nou. is substituted for Herpobdellinae Perrier, and Erpobdellinae nom nou. is substituted for Herpobdellinae Perrier, 1897, these new names being substitutes for incorrect derivations of
the type genera; Branchelliinae subfam. nou. is proposed to contain those genera of leeches with respiratory organs in the form of lamellar or tubular gills. The following genera are considered to be genera inquirenda: Exochleius of Rafinesque and Haemonis of Bernoulli. The names Absyrtus, Arthromerus, Casentula, Celaeno, Delgemus and Euphrone created by C. S. Rafinesque in 1815 and Hixiene Hartmann, 1777, are all considered to be nomina nuda.
