HIRUDINEOS DE MEXICO. XXII TAXA Y NOMENCLATURA DE LA CLASE HIRUDINEA HASTA GENEROS (Nueva edición)

Resumen

Since the first publication of this catalogne in 1956, we have received certain communications and bibliography which make necessary the clarification of some of the terrninology used therein.
The name Glossiphoniinae is now known to have been used by H. Autrum in 1936. The family Piscicolidae Johnston, 1865 was divided into two tribes designated as Branchiobdellinae and lchthyobdellinae by Prof. W. H. Leigh-Sharpe in 1916; Leigh-Sharp must be credited as the author of the two groups but not for the  orthography of them, since Ichthyobdellinae came to be a synonym of Piscicolinae Caballero, 1956 by reason of its not having been derived from an accepted name (that of the family); we have considered Branchiobdellinae
as a synonym also, on the basis of incorrect orthography. In both cases our names were new.
Names of new genera erected since the publication of the catalogue have been incorporated herein as Trachelobdellina Moore, 1957, allocated in the subfamily Piscicolinae Caballero, 1956; Myzobdella Leidy, 1852 which had been omitted from the previous edition, is placed in the same subfamily.
Genera now considered to by synonyms of previously existing ones include: Dundjibdella Sciacchitano, 1939 (synonym of Batracobdella Viguier, 1879); Bakedebdella Sciacchitano, 1939 (synonyn of Helobdella Blanchard, 1896); Dartevellida Sciacchitano, 1939 (synonym of Theromyzon Philipp, 1867); all of the above being in the subfamily Glossiphoniinae Autrum, 1936. Ichthyobdella Blainville, 1827 with its synonyms, has been reduced to synonym with Piscicola Blainville, 1818.
With reference to the family Hirudidae Pinto, 1921, we have introduced new synonymies which had been omitted from the first edition of the catalogue inadvertently: Gnathobdellea Leuckart, 1863 in partim; Gnathobdellida Claus, 1885 in partim; and Hirudinides Blanchard, 1887. in the subfamily Hirudinae Pinto, 1921, a new synonym is given as Natantia Brandes, 1901; the genus Hylacobdella Sciacchitano, 1935 has been withdrawn from this subfamily and transferred to the family Erpobdellinae Moore, 1924. Additional synonyms of the family Hirudidae include the following: Gnathobdellea Leuckart, 1863 in partim; Gnathobdellidae Claus, 1885 in partim; Nephelides Blanchard, 1887 and Herpobdellinae+Trochetinae Perrier, 1897.

Two genera which appeared as valid members of the subfamilies Erpobdellinae Caballero, 1956 and Trochetinae Perrier, 1897 in the previous edition, are now synonymized: Nematobdella Kaburaki, 1921 (synonym of Herpobdelloidea Kaburaki, 1921) and Scaptobdella Blanchard, 1897 (synonym of Trocheta Dutrochet, 1817).
Exochlieus Rafinesque, 1819 and Haemonis Bernouilli, 1849 continue to be genera inquirenda. To the list of nomina nuda, as given in the 1956 catalogue, should be added the genus Cymatobranchus Selensky, 1931 which this Russian hirudinologist placed in the family Piscicolidae Johnston, 1865, but for wich he failed to publish a generic diagnosis.
Some of the dates as given for the creation of generic names have been corrected, in accordance with the true date of publication of these.
