The need for a single, complete, and exhaustive polyglotic dictionary of the popular, common, and vernacular names for plants in
every part of the world has been acutely felt for many years by botanists, horticulturists, foresters, librarians, and research workers in many fields. Five years ago we began such a compilation for the 99 genera and 2,148 recognized species, varieties, forms, and hybrids in the four closely related plant families of Verbenaceae, Avicenniaceae, Stilbaceae, and Symphoremaceae, whose distribution is worldwide.
