PROBLEMS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTATION OF SOME NEW-WORLD SPECIES OF DORYLINE ANTS

Resumen

The results of these studies may be summarized briefly. Colonies of the terrestrial species Eciton (E.) hamatum and E. (E.) burchelli
exhibit a markedly regular cycle of behavior and reproductive processes, with the alternation of 1) a nomadic phase in which the colony develops large daily raids and moves off each night over a raiding trail to a new nesting site, and 2) a statary phase, in which raids are minimal or at times absent, and the colony is sessile.
